This afternoon, Greg Fetig of Hoosiers for a Conservative Senate, addressed a group in the atruim of the Indiana Statehouse before presenting a petition to the Governor, demanding that he order the election commission to investigate Senator Lugar’s residency. This is a bit of a messy subject once you delve into it, as Indiana law and National law seem to come into conflict. I could certainly debate that topic all day long, but if the election commission takes a look at this, I’m sure there will be lawyers coming out of the woodwork with various arguments.
What’s more interesting is that this is a case being overlooked by the election commission, while the Charlie White case is still fresh in our minds. Senator Lugar has been voting from an address in Indiana that he hasn’t lived in for years, and the current residents of that address had no knowledge he’s been doing this. While Lugar maintains an Indiana drivers liscense and his car is registered in Indiana, he actually has no place to call home in the state, has been living in Virginia for quite a while, and whenever he is in the state, he stays in hotels.
If Charlie White is convicted of felonies because he was in transition between his ex-wifes and his new place, I’m wondering why Lugar wasn’t called out on this long, long ago. I’m not a lawyer, so I won’t go into the technicalities (because I’m sure some of you will tell me how wrong I am), but there seems to be some sort of double standard going on here . . . with Charlie White, Jim Wallace, and Rick Santorum, the election commission has their hands full. But why is it candidates are called to account and the lawyers gear up for all of these cases, while Lugar’s issues just seem to slide by?
I don’t have a good answer, but I think the commission should at least take a look and see what’s going on here. There are a lot of details that I haven’t relayed in the post, because honestly, it’s all been hearsay at this point and I’d just be regurgitating what I’ve heard others say. Regardless, there are enough oddities that it’s certainly worthy of looking at. Below is a video from the press conference held today at the Statehouse. Enjoy.

Our laws should apply equally to everyone. We can’t have the law applying to someone, while someone else gets a pass on complying with the law because he’s popular.
Hmmm, things aren’t looking to good for our communist senator!
Thank you for people like you, Mr. Ogden and Mr. Welsh for exposing double standards. We are living a daily nightmare where people can ignore the law when it would have helped my husband, Charlie White, at trial and all the powerful people not only benefit from the law, but are given “extra rights.” I feel like we live in Russia now. So now Charlie has no job, will lose his law license and will probably lose our home while people like Dick Lugar, Evan Bayh and Mitch Daniels run free and can do anything they want because they are powerful and make their friends millions before they leave office. I feel like we are not equal. I cannot wait until Mitch Daniels is done being Governor because our family is garbage to him and I really hope that man doesn’t get any more power. He needs to stay in his mansion in Carmel where maybe one day he and Cheri will register and vote there.
I appreciate reading the reply from Michelle. I don’t understand the case as much as I should as I am not a lawyer. I believe in integrity. If you are right stand for it.. if you have done something wrong, admit it, take the punishment and go on living an integral life. In Charlie White’s case I do not know all the details, nor do I understand them.
However, if the state of Indiana continues to ignore the Lugar case who in my eyes even if Charlie was guilty… was 199 X worse… then I demand a public apology to Charlie and a PARDON. I cannot stand the establishment elitist who think they deserve a seat… just because of who they are. I am a Republican. A self admitted Republican, but protecting this man is an embarrassment. The connections between Daniels, Zoeller, and Dumezich are unprecedented. If they went after Charlie… they sure as heck better keep those same standards and stop choosing winners and losers, or a public apology is in order.
While Charlie White’s situation may appear similar to Dick Lugar’s, I don’t think the two really have much in common. Charlie never left the jurisdiction of the state of Indiana while Lugar is obviously serving in the Federal government. I also think that talk of voter fraud is absurd in both of their cases.
That said, under the US Constitution, I do not see how Senator Lugar is qualified to run for Senate. In my opinion, he simply does not meet the Art 1, Sec 3 requirement to “be an inhabitant of that state for which he shall be chosen.” I discuss that at greater length on my blog.
@Michelle,
You and your husband have my sympathy and prayers. Keep your heads up and keep fighting!
Well, David Wilke was in the Star yesterday trying to deflect the story by stating that Mourdock wasn’t a Hoosier and didn’t live in Vanderbilt Co. What a tool Wilke is! Mourdock stated that he still owned his house in Vanderbilt Co and an additional condo in Indianapolis. I say good for you Mr. Mourdock! Mr. Mourdock has been a long standing citizen of Indiana for many years. Once he won office, he moved his family to Indianapolis and bought an additional residence in Marion Co. as I would expect our representation to do. Maintaning an address here at the house you sold 35 years ago is plainly election fraud. Get a grip Mr. Wilke, your man Lugar is no longer a Hoosier and is out of touch with Hoosier values! I’d say this, Mr. Lugar bought his house in Virginia 35 years ago as an arrogant snub to the Hoosier electorate telling us: “Pry my cold dead fingers from my Senate seat if you can!” This entitlement politico feels he owns OUR Senate seat in DC and dares us to try to oust him. Sounds like Arlen Specter, of Pennsylvania, all over again. Go home Mr. Lugar where ever that might be! We constituents here in Indiana do not know where that is, but it is evident that you don’t live here and you no longer know who we are!
